Addressing the crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square, Pope Leo XIV reacted to recent developments in the Middle East, at a time of heightened tension following mutual attacks between the United States and Iran.
Tensions have risen following reported US airstrikes on targets linked to pro-Iranian forces in the region, as well as subsequent Iranian retaliation. The developments have heightened international concerns about a further escalation of the conflict and wider regional destabilization.
" I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and in Iran, in these dramatic hours. Stability and peace are not built with mutual threats nor with weapons, which sow destruction, pain and death, but only through a reasonable, authentic and responsible dialogue ," declared the Holy Father.
He stressed that there is a risk of an escalation with serious consequences for civilian populations and for regional stability. “ Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of extraordinary proportions, I appeal with deep concern to the parties involved to assume the moral obligation to stop the spiral of violence, before it turns into an irreversible abyss. Diplomacy must restore its role and promote the good of the peoples, who await a peaceful coexistence based on justice. Let us continue to pray for peace ,” the Pope added.
His statements come at a time when several countries and international organizations have called for restraint and for the resumption of diplomatic channels between Washington and Tehran, in order to avoid a deeper crisis in the region.
