Pope Leo XIV held a private meeting with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday, the Holy See Press Office announced.
The meeting came a day after the inauguration ceremony of the new pope of American origin, which was also attended by two representatives of the United States.
In a statement, the Holy See said both sides had expressed satisfaction with relations between the US and the Vatican during face-to-face talks on Monday. They discussed religious freedom and cooperation between church and state, which were also attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"Recently, there was an exchange of views on current international issues with a joint call for respect for humanitarian and international law in conflict zones, as well as support for negotiated solutions between the parties involved," the statement said.
The papal audience lasted 45 minutes, Vance's spokesman said. It was held behind closed doors without the presence of reporters.
Following the private audience with the American-born Pope, Mr. Vance met with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.
On Sunday, Vance said the United States was "very proud" of the Chicago-born pope. "Certainly our prayers go out to him as he begins this very important work," the vice president said.
Pope Leo, the former Cardinal Robert Prevost, is an Augustinian missionary born in Chicago.
Earlier, before his election as the new pope, he had directed criticism at the Trump administration over the deportation of immigrants.
While upon taking office, Pope Leo emphasized his continuity with Pope Francis, who made caring for migrants and the poor a priority of his papacy.
