According to information from the newspaper "Bild", Germany plans to send soldiers to Greenland. Reports indicate that initially, an advanced group of Bundeswehr personnel will be sent.
Sweden and Norway had previously announced their intention to also send troops.
The German Ministry of Defense has so far neither confirmed nor denied the plans.
According to information from the German newspaper, the operation could begin as early as Thursday.
Sources within the German government and Bundestag said an initial reconnaissance team would depart on Thursday.
Denmark announced on Tuesday that it will significantly increase its presence. In addition, other European NATO partners are expected to follow suit.
Officially, NATO countries from Europe are the ones expanding their presence in Greenland.
However, according to information reported by Bild, the operation is being coordinated from Copenhagen and not through NATO structures, because the Alliance's Nordic member states, including Greenland, are under the command of NATO headquarters in Norfolk, USA.
The operation is expected to continue without US involvement.
According to Bild, in addition to a training mission, the German Navy and Air Force could send forces.
Greenland has long been considered a possible base or deployment site for the new Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft (the first of which arrived in November).
Now, officers and technicians will first investigate what contribution the Bundeswehr can actually make within the framework of a joint mission of EU armies.
The first soldiers from Sweden are already on their way, initially for an exercise. “Several officers from the Swedish Armed Forces are arriving in Greenland today. They are part of a group from several allied countries,” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X. “Together, they will prepare the next steps in the Danish exercise ‘Operation Arctic Resilience’. Sweden is sending personnel from its armed forces at the request of Denmark.”
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius today called on NATO to defend Greenland and the surrounding region from Russian and Chinese aggression, in an article in the newspaper "Die Zeit".
This alone suggests Berlin's willingness to send troops, not just because of China and Russia, but mainly to serve US President Trump, who wants to annex Greenland.
