The body of an unidentified man has been found on a beach in Cyprus. According to reports, the body could be linked to the mysterious disappearance of 56-year-old Russian businessman Vladislav Baumgartner.
The former CEO of Russian fertilizer giant Uralkali has been missing since January 7.
As stated in the report, the body is in an advanced stage of decomposition, which currently makes its immediate identification impossible.
At the moment, the Police have not confirmed whether the body belongs to businessman Baumgartner.
It is recalled that the investigations focused on the wider Pissouri area and in particular on Kavo Aspro, where the missing man's mobile phone last transmitted a signal.
According to the Limassol Coroner's Office, no possibility has been ruled out regarding the cause of death so far.
Baumgartner made international headlines in 2013 when he was arrested at Minsk airport, Belarus, and held in a detention center.
His arrest was the culmination of a conflict between Moscow and the Belarusian government over the potash (potassium hydroxide) “cartel,” following Uralkali’s decision to sever ties with the state-owned company Belaruskali.
Baumgartner was subsequently charged with abuse of power and extradited to Moscow in November 2013, where he was placed under house arrest before being dismissed from his duties at Uralkali.
Although the charges against him were ultimately dropped in 2015, the case was seen at the time as a 'political hostage' situation, in the context of Putin-Lukashenko relations.
