The chairman of the Alliance for Albanians (ASH), Arben Taravari, has officially announced his candidacy for the president of North Macedonia, saying that the time has come for an Albanian president.

During a visit to Gostivar, Taravari stated that it is time for a real Albanian president and not a technical one.

Elections in North Macedonia are held on May 8.

"With the proposal of ASH and the support of the European Movement for Change (LEN), I am here today to announce my candidacy for president of the state... I believe that this day is the right day to start. I am sure of your support, I respectfully await the vote of each of you. The time has come for the country to have an Albanian president, but not technically. The change has started and this is now being seen" , said Taravari.

The President of North Macedonia is elected using a modified two-round system. A candidate can only be elected in the first round of voting if they receive the equivalent of over 50% of the votes from all registered voters. In the second round, voter turnout must be at least 40% for the result to be considered valid.

Currently, the president of North Macedonia is Stevo Pendarovski.

Taravari's request that ASH go to the May 8 elections with the Albanian opposition has provoked reactions within the party, which are divided. The secretary of the party said that ASH will go to the elections alone.

The ASH is currently part of the government with the DUI, which has the technical prime minister Talat Xhaferi.
