After the visit of President Volodymyr Zelenksy, the Netherlands and Denmark have announced that they will give Ukraine F16 fighter jets.
Kiev has been appealing for planes and increased air capacity for some time, warning of a tough battle in the fall and winter.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy received the good news first, as he visited the Netherlands and Denmark this Sunday, meeting Prime Ministers Mark Rutte and Mette Frederiksen. During his visit, the Ukrainian leader stopped at a Dutch army base in the city of Eindhoven, where he and Rutten inspected two parked F-16s.
While Zelenskyy said on Telegram that his country would receive 42 planes, the Netherlands and Denmark, in a joint statement, did not specify the numbers.
"The F-16s will not immediately help the war effort. It is, however, a long-term commitment from the Netherlands. We want them up and running as soon as possible. Not for the next month, that's impossible, but hopefully soon," said Rutte.
Meanwhile, during the stopover in Denmark, Zelensky and the Danish prime minister climbed into the cockpit of an F16 aircraft at the Skrydstrup Air Base. Afterwards, Danish Defense Minister Jakob Ellemann-Jensen said: "I feel proud that Denmark, together with the Netherlands, will donate F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine's fight for freedom against Russia and its senseless aggression."
