Easter does not stop the bloodshed in Ukraine, the Russian army attacks Donetsk

A rocket attack by the Russian military in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk province killed two people and wounded at least six others in Kharkiv in the country's northeast, local officials said today.

These attacks occurred as Ukrainians and Russians are celebrating Easter.

"In Pokrovsk, rocket attacks killed two people and damaged a house," Vadim Filaskin, the Ukrainian governor of Donetsk, said in a Telegram post.

Pokrovsk is about 60 kilometers northwest of the city of Donetsk, the capital of the Russian-occupied province of the same name that Moscow has announced it has annexed.

The Ukrainian Air Force announced for its part that Russia launched 24 Iranian Shahed drones overnight, of which 23 were shot down.

"A house and surrounding buildings were burnt due to Shahed's attacks. Six people were injured, including a girl born in 2015," said Kharkiv Governor Oleh Sinekhubov.

Easter messages

Both Ukrainian and Russian presidents used the Easter holiday to rally citizens to the war effort.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his Easter message called on his compatriots to pray for each other and for the soldiers fighting at the front, stressing that God, who has "a Ukrainian flag on his shoulder" is an ally of Kiev.

"Let's pray for each other. When we got closer to each other, we stopped being strangers," Zelensky said in the video posted on Telegram.

The video was shot in front of the 1,000-year-old Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian president pointed out that the country has now fought for 802 days against Russia in pursuit of victory. "And we believe that God has the Ukrainian flag on his shoulders. So, with such an ally, life will surely defeat death."

In Russia, Vladimir Putin made no clear reference to the war.

Addressing Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Church and staunch supporter of Moscow's war in Ukraine, Putin thanked him for his "useful cooperation in this current difficult period, when it is so important for us to join efforts with us with the aim of continuous development and strengthening of the homeland".
