The Strait of Hormuz could remain dangerous for months. According to the Pentagon, clearing it of naval mines could take up to six months and is not expected to begin before the end of the war.
As the Washington Post reports, US officials have informed lawmakers in Congress that Iran has placed more than 20 mines in this strategic maritime corridor.
According to the same sources, some of the mines were placed remotely using GPS technology, making it difficult for US forces to identify them in real time. Other mines were placed by small floating vehicles.
Earlier, CNN reported that Iran had begun laying mines in March, while the US and Israel continued the bombing campaign that began on February 28.
In the following days, the Pentagon announced that it had launched attacks on Iranian assets suspected of being used to lay mines.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has stated on social media that the US is destroying these assets "with ruthless precision", stressing that Washington will not allow the Strait of Hormuz to be held "hostage".
