Until that date, the West and China's subordinate partners will bleed through endless wars. So, when it is Taiwan's turn to be attacked, no one will want to hear about fighting, missiles or massacres. Not even in the positions of a third party.
It was a matter of millimeters. If the assassination of Thomas Matthew Crooks had succeeded, the United States would have been plunged into civil war. And because of the doubts about Biden's psycho-physical condition and the great debate that continues on whether or not he should continue the race, the presidential elections scheduled for November 5 would have been compromised.
In this scenario and with the American system paralyzed, the entire West would be brought to its knees. More than it already is. At the moment, it is impossible to come to light anything certain about the "secret" identity (assuming there is one) of the assassin.
For days to come, we will be supplied with data on his affiliations and ideological preferences. Perhaps the debate will continue for years, if not decades. It still remains a mystery how Crooks, apparently with good aim and an undisputed skill with weapons, was able to approach undisturbed to within only 120 yards of his chosen target.
And even take position and shoot. As has always happened, even in this case we will hear dozens of people who will say that they saw it, that they predicted it and warned the authorities but that they were not listened to. A strange repetition of the facts that happened before.
And each of us will easily adapt to our pre-existing beliefs long before this act took place. However, the overall picture behind the attack on Donald Trump is clear.
For years, a leaderless West - with the exception of Joe Biden, despite its well-known problems - has been under the blackmail of China, Russia and Iran, which are carving out many countries in the Southern Hemisphere.
We mentioned China first because the final challenge will be with the country led by Xi Jinping. Beijing expands its influence, buys entire economic zones in every part of the globe, and gives the green light to wars it thinks it can profit from.
Moreover, in the Atlantic world there are personalities who more or less openly put themselves at its service. And China has announced the strategic date for the game of the century to take back Taiwan: no later than 2049. But it will probably happen much earlier. And if things go the way they are now, it will most likely happen without a shot being fired.
Until that date, the West and China's subordinate partners will bleed through endless wars. So, when it is Taiwan's turn to be attacked, no one will want to hear about fighting, missiles or massacres. Not even in the positions of a third party.
The war in Ukraine has shown what Europe is made of. Some positive surprises came from countries bordering Russia. There was a big commitment from Great Britain, partly from Germany and unpredictably from Italy (but only until a few days ago).
The rest have been just talk, postponement of decisions and aid, as well as a lack of will to spend on the purchase or production of new weapons. All of which culminated in chorused calls for peace (ie surrender), received kindly and sometimes with some derision by Vladimir Putin.
However, remaining on our continent, we must positively mention the main figures of the EU and NATO, who have shown themselves to be up to the challenges presented by the time. They are being offset by the activism of the two leaders, the Hungarian Viktor Orbán (in the company of the Slovak Robert Fico) as well as Erdogan (only NATO), who willingly played with the triangle mentioned above.
But let's face it: this game isn't doing well at all. However, the most important unknown remains: the USA. And here we come to our main argument. Despite all his problems, Joe Biden has shown himself to be a stable leader, although perhaps more cautious than necessary in sending weapons to Zelensky when he needed them.
Of course, he behaved this way for very understandable reasons. He did not want to bear responsibility for the outbreak, perhaps due to the recklessness of Ukraine, of a real war with Russia. But Donald Trump remains the biggest unknown in this equation.
In every statement of his, Putin tries to make him seem to us like his puppet, that is, as if he is some kind of Marine Le Pen, or one of those Europeans we mentioned above, who have long been at the disposal of the Chinese. But for all his craziness, Trump may be a surprise.
It is not certain that if returned to the White House, Trump would turn into a wise executor of orders coming from Russia, Iran and China. Of course, we find Biden credible and Trump not.
But to be on the safe side, a civil war involving the United States is in any case much more convenient for Moscow, Beijing and Tehran than Trump's unpredictability. Let's be clear: we do not intend to imply that these three countries, or other entities associated with them, have anything to do with the Pennsylvania attack.
We just want to say that if Crooks' attack succeeds, China, Russia and Iran would have reason to rejoice. A chaos could happen in Washington, which would be pleasant in their eyes, and which could even be preferred by Donald Trump himself./ Adapted " Pamphlet" from " Corriere della Sera "
