5,630 packages filled with cocaine were seized. It is reported that the shipment was destined for Germany and is estimated at 224 million dollars if it reaches its destination.
Meanwhile, according to the general prosecutor's office, five people were arrested. Police said they found the massive amount of cocaine during a routine inspection of the container stored at the Posorja port southwest of Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. Packages of cocaine were hidden under crates of bananas destined for export.
One of those arrested was a representative of the export company responsible for the shipment, who prosecutors said had been present at the inspection, and they gave officials the names of four other suspects. Among them are the managers of the banana plantation where cocaine is suspected to have been added to the fruit load, as well as the driver who took the container to the port.
Ecuador has become a major transit country for cocaine produced in neighboring Peru and Colombia, with transnational criminal gangs using Ecuador's ports to transport the drug to Europe and the US. Last year, Ecuadorian security forces seized more than 200 tons of drugs, most of which was cocaine.
