The West urges Israel to quickly end the war in Gaza

The United States and its allies in the Group of Seven (G7) most industrialized nations are seeking to find a quick way to end the war in the Gaza Strip conflict, Italy said on Monday, while US Secretary of State of the State, Antony Blinken, and his counterparts from the European Union are visiting the region.

Blinken held meetings on Gaza in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia on Monday before leaving for Israel, aiming to launch concrete peace efforts that he says are needed to prevent more war. wide.

He began a five-day visit to the Middle East on Sunday in Jordan and Qatar. This is his fourth visit to the region since the October 7 attack, when Israel was attacked by Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - which also prompted Israel to start a war that shows no signs of ending.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock visited Israel on Monday, while the EU's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, visited Lebanon.

"The G7 countries are working with the Government of Israel to find a quick way to end the military phase," Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said after Italy began its one-year presidency of the G7.

Baerbock, meanwhile, told Israel it has a duty to protect Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, after Blinken warned of an escalation of the conflict on Sunday in Doha.

"This is a conflict that can very easily spread," said Blinken.

Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said his country is committed to ending Hamas' rule in Gaza and curbing other potential groups backed by Iran, such as Hezbollah.

"We are fighting a pivot, not a single enemy. Iran is building up military power around Israel in order to use it," Gallant said.

On Monday morning, the Israeli army called on residents in Al Moghani in central Gaza to evacuate several neighborhoods, which it said "are dangerous war zones."

Nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been displaced from their homes by the war at least once, and many are being displaced again, often sheltering in tents.

Israel, whose offensive has also caused shortages of food, water and medicine, accuses Hamas fighters of deliberately using civilians as human shields, charges they deny.

Blinken said he will ask Israeli officials to do more to protect civilians in Gaza and allow Palestinians to return to their homes.

More than 23,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza during the Israeli offensive, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has warned that the war will not stop until Hamas returns the more than 100 hostages it is still holding, of the 240 it kidnapped during the October 7 attack in southern Israel, where the also killed 1,200 people. /REL
