After three hours of discussions, the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump's envoy, Mr. Witkoff, has ended.

Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov, who attended the meeting, called it a constructive dialogue between the parties on achieving peace in Ukraine. Among other issues, they discussed the possibility of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine, he added.

The talks have brought the positions of Russia and the US closer not only on Ukraine, but also on other issues, says Ukashov, adding that the productive dialogue between Russia and the US will continue at various levels.

Meanwhile, earlier today, the Reuters news agency said it had seen documents outlining two separate peace proposals to end the Russia-Ukraine war, both mentioning territorial recognition.

Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale occupation eight years later, Russian forces have occupied approximately 20% of the country.

Russia has since held a series of referendums in the occupied territory, widely condemned as fraudulent polls, in which Moscow claimed that up to 99% of people voted in favor of joining Russia.

But what are the Ukrainian territories under Russian control that can be recognized by Moscow?

Crimea : Russia invaded the southern Crimean peninsula in February 2014 before annexing it shortly afterwards.

Luhansk and Donetsk : The two eastern regions make up the Donbas region, which has been contested since Russian-backed separatists took control in 2014.

Kherson : Russia occupies the southern part south of the Dnieper River, which flows into the Black Sea. Ukrainian forces liberated its largest city, also called Kherson, in a major victory in 2022.

Zaporizhzhia : Russia has controlled most of the southern region of Zaporizhzhia since 2022, annexing it later that year.

US envoy Steve Witkoff, who met with Vladimir Putin for talks today, has previously suggested a possible peace deal hinges on the status of these five regions./ Pamphlet
