Former Democratic MP and activist Rudina Hajdari shows how narrow political interests, economic oligarchy, and controlled media have created a closed system that ignores the will of citizens.
When the system fails to represent the citizens, power is concentrated in the hands of an unchanging elite that controls every cell of society. This blockage of new avenues comes from a structure consolidated over decades, which has annihilated free competition in the country. Only through an organic citizen reaction can one hope to break this stifling monopoly.
In an interview for the popular YouTube channel “Legal AF”, former MP and activist Rudina Hajdari delves into the grim reality of the “old guard” that is still holding Albania hostage. Through a detailed analysis of the recent protests, she shows how narrow political interests, the economic oligarchy and the controlled media have created a closed system that ignores the will of the citizens.
Focusing on the role of SPAK and the importance of Western support, Hajdari shares a message of hope for the urgent need for a new class of politicians.
What is happening in Albania and what prompted the "Flamingo Revolution"?
I just returned from Tirana where protests continue every night. They were caused by Jared Kushner and the Trump family's project in Vlora. This project is planned to be built in an environmentally protected area where flamingos and rare birds live.
The Rama government changed the law at the last minute without consulting the locals, which led to clashes and heavy police violence against protesters. However, this project was just a springboard.
People have taken to the streets because the current system has failed to represent them. The protest is entirely organic, without party leadership, fueled by successive corruption scandals where senior government and municipal officials have ended up in prison.
Although foreign investment and tourism account for 22 percent of our GDP, people have become fed up with the lack of transparency and accountability on the part of the prime minister.
So people want representative democracy, but unlike countries like Hungary, they're not looking for an authoritarian leader to save them?
In this case, we have a story of hope, where democracy is fighting for itself. Similar to the long protests in Serbia against Vučić for similar investments, this shows that democracy must be seen beyond technical criteria, respecting the culture and values of the country.
Since the fall of communism, Albanians have been made numerous promises of EU integration that were never kept. This happened because the politicians at the top, including the opposition, where I myself was a member for several years, turned out to be corrupt.
A mendon se kjo lëvizje do të jetë e qëndrueshme?
If these problems are not addressed, they will escalate to irreversible points such as dictatorship. Albania is today a story of hope that shows that the renewal of democracy is possible.
