Andy Burnham has been officially confirmed as the new leader of the ruling Labour Party in the United Kingdom, completing the final formal step before taking office as prime minister.
Before Burnham began his first speech as Labor Party leader, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said there was only one qualified nominated candidate receiving 379 nominations, meeting the threshold to proceed to the next stage.
Among the unions and related social associations, one candidate received a total of 23 nominations, including from all eleven unions.
She then announced that Andy Burnham had been elected leader of the Labour Party.
"Given that there was no other candidate validly nominated, I have the honour to announce that the elected leader of the Labour Party is Andy Burnham," Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said during a special party conference.
After being confirmed as Labour leader, Burnham is expected to officially take office as prime minister next week, leading the government into a new political era.
