Capitulation plan, Trump forces Zelensky to surrender to Putin

Zelensky has been backed against the wall by Trump to accept the American plan, while a political revolt is erupting in the heart of Kiev that could determine the future of the war and the country's leadership itself.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has officially received a draft of a US plan to end the war in Ukraine and has agreed to discuss it. The 28-point plan, unveiled on Wednesday, reinstates proposals that Ukraine had already turned down in previous efforts: surrender of territory, reduction in the number of soldiers, no foreign troops and no long-range weapons.

But with the Russian advance in Donbas and the corruption scandal that is thought to be only the tip of the iceberg and that threatens to destroy his team, Zelensky reacts by swallowing the bitter pill: without compromise, the United States and Trump are an ally as unwilling as they are necessary.

"Our teams will work on this," he said after the meeting in Kiev with Pentagon envoys, including US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll. "We are ready for constructive, honest and rapid work."

Everything is postponed, however.

He is buying time, needs to understand the room for maneuver and "in the coming days" wants to "discuss" it directly with Trump. To assess, he says, "the diplomatic options available and the main points needed."

To see, then, whether the castle of unfavorable cards will collapse in on itself. Whether this time too the "capitulation plan" presented by Trump as the only way out will end up in smoke.

What the presidential offices really think is very different from what Zelensky officially says. For the whole day, half-hearted reactions have defined the draft as "absurd" and "unacceptable." The chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Oleksandr Merezhko, and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, called it a "Russian provocation."

But the pressure to move forward is great.

"Achieving a lasting peace will require both sides to accept difficult but necessary concessions," says US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, leaving a small door open for Kiev to develop a list of possible ideas based on the contribution of both sides to the conflict.

"Trump's plan is in constant evolution, but the president supports it. It is a good plan for both Russia and Ukraine, and we believe it should be acceptable to both sides," the White House insisted.

Zelensky consults with allies and for the moment chooses the soft line. He does not support it, but clarifies and prepares the ground to try once again to smooth over the thorns one by one. Trump and his team have presented him with capitulation plans before and he has dismantled them one by one: "We will work on the points to guarantee a dignified end to the war," says his office on an extremely difficult day for the first internal confrontation related to the corruption scandal: The Servants of the People demanded the resignation of the head of the Presidential Office, Yermak, but did not succeed. The head of the faction, in the evening, was destabilized by the president's decision to make a circle with his trusted man.

The majority has only 299 votes against the necessary 296, a margin that exposes it to nervousness and earthquakes. At the head of the anti-Yermak faction was the party leader in Parliament, David Arakhamia: his dismissal was also mentioned. Tensions are high, but for the moment both remain in their places: "We must stay united. Whoever is against us is for Russia," Zelensky said, according to a deputy./ La Repubblica
