Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired the head of the State Guard on Thursday, two days after two of its members were charged with plotting to kill the president. President Zelensky issued a decree for the dismissal of Mr. Serhiy Rud. There are no announcements on who will replace him.
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) said this week it had detained two colonels of the state guard service on charges of plotting to kill Mr Zelensky and other senior officials. The SBU said the assassinations would have been a "gift" to President Vladimir Putin as he was sworn in for a new term on Tuesday. Ukraine's security agency said the two detainees had been recruited by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and had provided Moscow with classified information.
The two detainees, the SBU said, had been tasked with finding someone in the presidential guard who would take Mr. Zelensky hostage and then kill him. There is no indication at what stage the plot was discovered. Moscow has not commented on the statements of the SBU.
President Zelensky said last year that Ukrainian security services had uncovered and foiled at least five Russian plots to kill him. The SBU said the spy group also planned to kill the head of this agency, Vasyl Maliuk, and the head of the military intelligence agency, Kyrylo Budanov./VOA
