Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano handed Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni his "irrevocable resignation" after his extramarital affair with a blogger, Maria Rosaria Boccia, was revealed.
Italian media reports that Sangiuliano cheated on his wife with an employee of the Ministry of Culture.
After leaving, he stated that he will act "in all legal settings against anyone who has caused me this damage, starting with an imminent complaint to the Public Prosecutor's Office, which I intend to file".
"I will take action against those who have published fake news in the last few days. I need personal peace, to be near my wife, whom I love," he said.
The Prime Minister thanked Sangiuliano, describing him as "a capable person and an honest man, for the extraordinary work done so far, which has allowed the Italian government to achieve important results of restarting and valuing the great Italian cultural heritage." , even outside the national borders".
Sangiuliano will be replaced by Alessandro Giuli. The President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, received this afternoon at the Quirinale Palace, Meloni.
The President of the Republic signed the decree by which the resignation submitted by Gennaro Sangiuliano from the position of the Minister of Culture was accepted at Melon's proposal. With the same decree, at the proposal of the prime minister, Alessandro Giuli was appointed Minister of Culture.
The text of Sangiuliano's letter to the prime minister:
"Dear President, dear Giorgia, after pondering for a long time, in painful days full of hatred towards me from a certain media political system, I have decided to irrevocably resign from my resignation as Minister of Culture.
Thank you for protecting me. Firmly, for rejecting a first request for resignation and for the love you have shown me once again, but I believe it is necessary for the institutions and me to resign, as you recently reminded us, we are doing great things I say this as a political and human community, to which I feel that I belong, I am proud of the results achieved in cultural policies in these almost two years of government, starting from ending the all-Italian shame of museums and cultural sites.
Institutions closed during holiday periods, increasing the number of museum visitors (+22 percent) and revenue (+33 percent) in just one year. Palazzo Citterio, bought by the ministry in the early seventies and then left unused for decades, will open in Milan in December. Major projects such as the former Albergo dei Poveri in Naples, the expansion of the Uffizi in other locations and the investment for the Venice Biennale are well underway. For the first time in Italy, major exhibitions were organized for authors and historical figures that the left had ignored for ideological reasons.
I am also aware that I have touched a sensitive nerve and that I have attracted a lot of hostility by choosing to review the contribution system in cinemas, seeking more efficiency and less waste. This work cannot be tarnished and above all stopped by gossip issues.
Institutions have a very high value and should not be subject to the reasons of individuals. I need personal peace, to be near my wife whom I love, but above all to have my hands free to take action in all legal settings against whoever caused me this harm, starting with an imminent complaint in Public Prosecution, which I intend to submit.
My honor is at stake here and I consider it important that I can act to demonstrate my absolute transparency and fairness, without involving the Government. Not a single euro from the Ministry has been spent on improper activities. I have said it and I will prove it everywhere. Not only that. I will go to the end to verify whether different interests have contributed to this matter and I will take action against those who have published fake news in the last few days."
