Orban: EU needs close cooperation on markets and defense, not politics

The European Union needs closer cooperation on markets and defense, but not on political issues such as immigration, where large differences between countries make such a thing impossible, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday.

"There are issues, even existential issues, for which we do not have common solutions. They are war and peace, immigration, gender, work-based society and full employment," Orban said at a conference in Italy.

"If you force us to unite on issues we don't agree on, then that's how you break up the European Union," he said.

Orban also said that his visits to Kiev and Moscow earlier this year, for which he was heavily criticized by some EU partners, led him to conclude that "neither side intends and reaching a ceasefire for now".

Hungary, which has maintained close ties with Russia since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has been holding the six-month EU presidency since July.

After taking over the leadership of the bloc, Orban visited Kiev and then made a surprise trip to Moscow and Beijing, before attending the NATO summit in Washington.

The "mission of peace" declared by him received great criticism from some EU leaders, who distanced the bloc from his actions./ REL
