Thousands of supporters of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was captured along with his wife during the US military operation on January 3, protested in Caracas demanding his release.
The protest was held on Friday (23/1), on the 68th anniversary of the fall of the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez (1948–1958).
The country's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has sought to strengthen relations with Washington, but her government continues to demand the return of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who remain imprisoned in the United States.
"We want them to return to their homeland," read a giant banner placed near O'Leary Square in downtown Caracas. Marlene Blanco, a 65-year-old accountant, called Maduro's arrest "illegal" and "unjust."
"The oil is ours. And it must be paid for properly," she added, referring to US President Donald Trump's efforts to take control of Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
"Our greatest triumph at this moment will be the return of President Maduro and (first lady) Cilia," Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello declared during the rally, according to state television.
He also assured that interim president Delcy Rodríguez enjoys the "full support of the ruling party."
