Russia does not stop attacks in Ukraine, 27 injured and one dead in Kiev

One person was killed and 27 others were injured in intense Russian attacks overnight in Kiev and Kharkiv.

A state of alert has been declared across Ukraine, while in the capital, military authorities have warned of the threat of drone and ballistic missile attacks.

According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, damage was reported in five neighborhoods in Kiev.

"One person died and four were injured. Three of the injured were hospitalized," he posted on Telegram, where he also reported disruptions in heating and water supplies in several suburban neighborhoods.

The attacks came as envoys were expected to meet in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday for a second day of talks. The talks are the first time Trump administration officials have sat down with both countries as part of Washington's push for progress to end Moscow's nearly four-year occupation.

The UAE foreign ministry said the talks were part of efforts “to promote dialogue and identify political solutions to the crisis.” The White House described the first day of talks as productive.

There has been a flurry of diplomatic activity in recent days, from Switzerland to the Kremlin, although there are still serious obstacles between the two sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday that a possible peace deal was "almost ready."

Just hours before the trilateral talks were due to begin, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a solution to the crisis in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during marathon overnight talks.

The Kremlin insists that to reach a peace deal, Kiev must withdraw its troops from areas in the east that Russia illegally annexed but has not fully occupied.
