Putin and Trump become 'friends in disguise', Russia offers 'rare

Putin said potential deals for rare earth metal exploration could also extend to deposits in territory in eastern Ukraine that Russia occupied after three years of military action.

President Donald Trump's statements yesterday during his meeting with French counterpart Emmanuel Macron appear to have left a good impression on the Russian despot.

Seeing US demands on Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to sell Russia's rare earth minerals to American companies, including those in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

" We are ready to work with our partners, including the Americans. We definitely have, I want to emphasize, much more resources of this kind than Ukraine," Putin said, adding that Russia could resume selling aluminum to the US.

Putin said potential deals for rare earth metal exploration could also extend to deposits in territory in eastern Ukraine that Russia occupied after three years of military action.

Earlier on Monday, Trump told reporters in Washington that " major economic development transactions with Russia" would occur.

Within two hours of the US president's statement, Putin chaired an unannounced meeting with his ministers and economic advisers on rare earth metals.

Russia has the world's fifth-largest reserves of rare earth metals, according to data from the US Geological Survey, after China, Brazil, India and Australia.

Recall that Trump has asked Volodymyr Zelensky to sign an agreement that transfers the exploitation of Ukrainian rare earths to the US in exchange for aid and a guarantee of peace with Russia.

Zelensky has refused to do so, but has proposed using them for a certain period of time in co-ownership with Ukraine, which has so far been rejected by Trump. / Adapted from "Pamphlet" by "The Guardian"
