Putin stressed that the Greenland issue is between the two countries and does not involve Russia, giving Trump the 'OK' to proceed with his plan.
The two most powerful and vocal leaders of the moment, Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, seem to have found common ground and are in symbiosis with each other.
While Trump has been alarming the world that Putin will attack and invade EU countries if they don't listen to the US and accept a deal with Moscow, Putin seems to be hitting back.
Commenting on Donald Trump's repeated statements about the US's invasion of Greenland, Putin said that these ambitions were no surprise and should be taken seriously.
"It would be a grave mistake to think that this is just an eccentric talk of the new American administration, nothing like that ," he said.
Putin stressed that similar plans were first raised by Washington in the 1860s, but that a proposal to annex Greenland and Iceland was rejected by Congress.
"These plans have deep historical roots, and it is clear that the US will continue to promote its geopolitical, military and economic interests in the Arctic. As for Greenland, I think this is an issue that concerns two states and has nothing to do with us. However, we are concerned by the fact that NATO countries are increasingly identifying the far north as a stronghold for potential conflicts," Putin said, SkyNews reports.
Continuing to talk about the topic, Putin added that Russia will defend its interests in the Arctic as geopolitical rivalries intensify in the region. The Russian despot raised concerns that NATO member states have been conducting an increasing number of military exercises in the Arctic. Despite this, Putin stressed that the Greenland issue is between the two countries and does not involve Russia, giving Trump the 'OK' to proceed with his plan.
"Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic, but we are closely watching the latest developments. The number of military personnel in the Arctic will increase. We are developing our response capabilities by improving our military infrastructure. We will not allow the infringement of the sovereignty of our country, we will defend our national interests. I am confident that the time for such projects will definitely come ," he concluded.
In the broadest sense, it seems that Putin and Trump have agreed to use fear as an instrument to achieve their goals, always with each other's help.
