Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to meet his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian this week as concerns grow that the Middle East crisis could spiral out of control.
Russian news agencies have quoted President Putin's adviser, Yury Ushakov, as saying that the two leaders will meet in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat, on October 11.
Ushakov has said that Putin plans to discuss with Pezeshkian at the BRICS summit to be held in the Russian city of Kazan on October 22-24.
These announcements signaled the continuation of cooperation between the two countries, as the crisis in the Middle East is not in sight.
Ushakov did not give more details about the meetings, but only that Putin has no plans to meet with the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, regarding the escalation of the situation in the region.
Not planning a meeting with Netanyahu suggests that Russia's current diplomatic focus may be more related to partnerships within the BRICS framework, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa.
Israel marked on Monday the first anniversary of Hamas attacks on Israeli soil, which killed more than 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages.
The Israeli army then launched a military campaign in Gaza, with the aim of destroying Hamas.
Currently, the Israeli army is also carrying out airstrikes in Beirut, with the aim of destroying another militant group, Hezbollah.
Hamas is a terrorist group declared by the United States and the European Union.
Hezbollah is declared a terrorist group by the United States, while the EU blacklists only the armed wing, but not the political party.
The Hezbollah political party has seats in Lebanon's Parliament. Both Hamas and Hezbollah enjoy the support of Iran./ REL
