The Government of Kosovo lifts the ban on imports of goods from Serbia!

The government of Kosovo decided to lift the ban on imports of goods from Serbia, amid concerns that the refusal could leave Kosovo out of important processes such as the Berlin Process.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, confirmed on Monday that the government will allow the entry of goods from Serbia through the main border crossing in Merdarë.

"The Republic of Kosovo has changed the security measure from restriction to increased control, until the scanners arrive. When the scanners arrive, they will be placed at all border points, but until the scanners arrive, we will open a border point that will have increased control because the measures we have are security measures. Prime Minister Kurti said during a press conference.

The government of Kosovo banned the import of goods from Serbia in June 2023, as a security measure after the situation created by the arrest of three members of the Kosovo police by Serbian forces, who were then released under Western pressure.

Prime Minister Kurti insisted that his government's measures have never been commercial. Western diplomacy, and recently Germany in particular, have continuously asked the government to lift the ban, stressing that it is against the principles of the Central European Free Trade Agreement, known as CEFTA, where Kosovo is a member along with five other countries of the Western Balkans and Moldova.

In return, Kosovo has been offered representation in CEFTA under its own name - footnote and not through the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), as it currently is, as well as support for the provision of scanners that will carry out inspections of barges that they enter from Serbia.

The Berlin Process, which this year marks the tenth anniversary of its establishment, is an initiative launched in 2014 by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, with the aim of deepening coordination between the countries of the Western Balkans as well as supporting the accession process of this region to the Union. European.

The next meeting is expected to be held on October 14, and experts in political developments in the region consider it the only important European agenda for the Western Balkans, which includes all the countries of the region and treats them equally./ VOA
