A year ago, the militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people. Another 251 were taken hostage.
Around 6:30 a.m. on October 7, 2023, the last day of the Jewish holy day of Shabbat and the holiday of Simchat Torah, a barrage of rockets was fired from Gaza into Israel.
Thousands of gunmen then entered Israeli territory, in what Hamas called Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, to launch the deadliest attack in Israel's history.
The scale of the massacre came as a shock to Israeli society, which has not yet recovered, writes The Guardian. After October 7, Israel launched a bloody war in Gaza that has killed 41,800 Palestinians and continues today.
The song that was played as Hamas militants attacked the Nova music festival last year was played again during a memorial for those killed there in the October 7 attacks.
In an emotional moment for the family and friends of those killed and kidnapped in Gaza, the track was played, then abruptly stopped, at the same time as last year.
Many of those gathered at the memorial cried, hugged and comforted each other remembering the last moments of their loved ones.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog attended the ceremony, speaking to the families of those killed here and walking through the memorial field.
