Returning to the center of global decision-making, Donald Trump has warned that he will hold a direct conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin "very soon" in an attempt to influence the course of the war in Ukraine.
“I’m going to talk to him over the next few days,” Trump told reporters. “I want to know exactly what happened. We’ve taken very strong measures, and not just in one direction. There are other ways that we’re using them.”
This statement comes shortly after Putin's harsh signals from Beijing, where he implied that Russia is ready to "take by force what is due to it" if efforts to reach an agreement with Ukraine fail.
Trump, without directly mentioning these threats, hinted that he is concerned about the intensification of the conflict and that he will seek an alternative solution.
“I believe we will reach a good solution to this war,” he said. “But war is a very interesting thing. You never know with war. It is complicated, dangerous... a real mess. A bloody mess.”
He closed the comment with a clear appeal: “At the end of the day, the killing of these souls must stop.”
