Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has clashed with Hungary's newly elected Prime Minister Peter Magyar, following the latter's statements that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "pulling the strings" in Serbia as well.
At a press conference, Magyar said that Putin is behind the close relations between former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Serbian President Vučić. He stated:
“I know exactly what is happening in Serbia and I also know what kind of connections exist between the Orbán government and the Serbia led by Vučić, as well as between Robert Fico and Viktor Orbán. I also know roughly who is behind them, who is the ‘godfather’ of these great friendships.”
In his response to Serbian state television, Vučić rejected these claims and described them as unfounded.
"He said he knows who is behind the relations between Orbán, Fico and Vučić. I'm asking him: who is it? Come on, let him say it. He has no idea... hinting that it could be Putin. If I weren't worried about relations with Hungarians in our country and with Hungary itself, I would call his statement thoughtless and irresponsible ," he said.
Hungary under Viktor Orbán has been distinguished for a more pragmatic approach towards Russia, often at odds with EU policies, while Slovakia led by Robert Fico has expressed similar positions in relation to the war in Ukraine.
