Hezbollah refuses to recognize any agreement from Lebanon-Israel talks

Senior group officials oppose direct negotiations in the US and urge Lebanon to withdraw

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah will not recognize any agreement that may emerge from direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in the United States, negotiations it openly opposes, Wafiq Safa, a senior member of Hezbollah's political council, said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Safa spoke on the eve of an expected meeting in Washington between the ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel to the U.S. The meeting marks the first time in decades that representatives of the two countries, which do not have diplomatic relations, have sat down for direct face-to-face talks.

"Regarding the results of this negotiation between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy, we have no interest and they do not concern us at all," Safa declared.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Naim Kassem called on Lebanon to withdraw from talks with Israel during a televised speech on the eve of the meeting.

According to recent developments, the escalation of the conflict began on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets towards northern Israel, following US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that at least 2,055 people have been killed in Israeli attacks, including 252 women, 165 children and 87 health workers, while 6,588 others have been injured. More than 1 million people have been displaced.

The Lebanese government, which says it aims to disarm Hezbollah, has been demanding direct talks since the beginning of the conflict. Last week, Israel announced it had agreed to participate in these negotiations.
