The US president continues to verbally escalate the conflict with the mullahs' regime. Meanwhile, the US military is preparing for a longer engagement against Iran.
Donald Trump has escalated his stand in the dispute with Iran over its nuclear and missile programs. Trump made it clear that he favors a change of power in Tehran. When a reporter asked him during a visit to the US military base Fort Bragg in North Carolina, he said: “That seems like the best thing that could happen.” He did not say who could succeed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump simply stated: “There are people.”

The US president went on to explain that it is difficult to reach a deal with Iran. "Sometimes you have to instill fear." Trump added that fear was the only thing that would clear the situation.
The president said the leadership in Tehran must “give us the deal they should have given us the first time.” Washington and Tehran negotiated Iran’s nuclear program last year, but talks stalled. Just before another scheduled round of negotiations, Israel attacked targets in Iran on June 13, 2025. More than a week later, U.S. forces joined in and bombed Iranian nuclear facilities.
"If they give us the right deal, we won't do it," the US president added, referring to possible attacks on Iran.
Talks with Iran to take place in Geneva on Tuesday
According to the news portal “Axios”, a new round of negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program is scheduled to take place in Geneva on Tuesday (17.02.2026). A US delegation, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, will meet with representatives from Tehran in Switzerland, the report said. Envoys from Oman will also be present as mediators. In the afternoon, Witkoff and Kushner will participate in trilateral negotiations with delegations from Ukraine and Russia.
Meanwhile, according to two administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, U.S. forces are preparing for a prolonged engagement against Iran in the event of an attack order from Trump. The government in Washington announced on Friday (13.02.2026) the deployment of another aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Middle East, along with thousands of additional troops, fighter jets and destroyers.
At the end of January, the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln with various accompanying ships had already deployed to the Gulf region to increase pressure on Tehran after its suppression of mass protests.
Iran's state and security facilities are also targeted by the US
The current plans are more complex than previous operations, two government officials said. In a prolonged military operation, Iran's state and security facilities, not just its nuclear infrastructure, could now be targeted, one of the insiders told Reuters. The United States is counting on retaliation from Iran, which could lead to reciprocal attacks over a prolonged period.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly, when asked about preparations for a longer US military operation, said: “President Trump has all options on the table with regard to Iran.” The Pentagon declined to comment.
