Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, who died two years ago, was poisoned while in prison. The poison came from a toxin found in poison dart frogs in South America. Two years after the Munich Security Conference was rocked by news of the Kremlin critic’s death in prison, the secret services of five Western countries have said that the Russian opposition leader was poisoned with epibatidine, a deadly neurotoxin. They say only the Russian state had the means, the motive and the opportunity to use it during his imprisonment in Siberia. They say Russia must be held accountable for the death.
Russian authorities had previously attributed his death to a “combination of illnesses.” This claim was met with skepticism. Laboratories from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands have found traces of the toxin in tissue samples secretly taken from Russia. According to experts, the substance causes rapid paralysis and respiratory failure, while the reported symptoms are consistent with its effects.
The five countries are expected to present their findings to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, accusing Russia of violating international obligations. Moscow has rejected the statement.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called it a hoax by Western propaganda. She said an official reaction would come only after the results and formulas of the substances in question are made public.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in Munich that he does not think Vladimir Putin may have plans to poison him.
"I can't think about Vladimir Putin and his plans to poison me, if there are any. I try not to think about it. Otherwise I would only think about this," Zelensky told reporters at the Munich Security Conference.
