Wagner group rebellion, Erdogan expresses his support for Putin

The Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, today held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to express his support to the Russian government, regarding the uprising of the Wagner group.

In a written statement distributed by the Kremlin, it is said that Erdogan expressed full support for the steps taken by the Russian leadership.

" The President of Russia provided information on the situation in the country regarding an attempted armed rebellion. The President of the Republic of Turkey expressed full support for the steps taken by the Russian leadership ," the announcement said.

Earlier, Putin said he had given orders to the army to neutralize those who organized the armed rebellion. Addressing the nation, he accused Wagner's boss Yevgeny Prigozhin of "treason".

The uprising began early on Saturday when Wagner's fighters took the city of Rostov before heading to Voronezh. Tensions between Moscow and the paramilitary group rose after Prigozhin accused Russian forces of attacking his fighters in Ukraine. Russia denied the claims late Friday and issued arrest warrants for Prigozhin.

Prigozhin, in recent months, has repeatedly accused Russia of not supplying enough weapons to the paramilitary group that fought alongside the Russian army in Ukraine.

While Russia has relied on Wagner to carry out its operations in Syria and Ukraine, the group is also known for its involvement in other conflicts around the world, including Libya, Sudan and Mozambique.
