Rivalry with Greece, Turkey is armored with Eurofighter; Erdogan receives 44

With massive purchases of new and used Typhoon fighter jets, Erdogan is trying to "correct" Greece's undisputed superiority in the Aegean skies. On Monday afternoon, he signed a $10.7 billion deal in Ankara for the supply of 24 Eurofighters, while late last week he declared that negotiations with Qatar and Oman for the supply of 12+12 "little-used" Eurofighter fighter jets are in the final stages.

However, it is noted that according to the British government, the first deliveries of new fighter jets are planned for 2030 and only for second-hand ones from Gulf countries, Turkish sources report that they will begin arriving in the neighboring country from the beginning of 2026.

The agreement follows a preliminary memorandum of understanding in July between the two countries for the supply of up to 40 Typhoons, with the consent of the members of the European Eurofighter consortium - Germany, Italy and Spain, represented by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.

"This historic deal with Turkey is a victory for British workers, a victory for the defence industry and a victory for NATO security," said Keir Starmer, adding that London and Ankara "play a crucial role on both sides of Europe in addressing international challenges." It is noted that Britain played a catalytic role in overcoming any German opposition to the arms sale to Ankara.

British Defense Secretary John Healy, who accompanied the British prime minister to Ankara, spoke of the "largest export of fighter jets in a generation," adding that the deal "will keep Typhoon production lines active for years to come" and "will strengthen NATO's deterrent power in a critical region."

The British Prime Minister said the Turkish order would ensure the sustainability of 20,000 jobs across the UK "for several years". As is known, the production split foresees that approximately 37% of each aircraft will be manufactured in the UK, with the remainder coming from Eurofighter partner countries.
