White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Malta this weekend.
The news has been confirmed by both Beijing and Washington, as the world's two largest economies seek to stabilize troubled relations.
According to separate statements on Sunday from the White House and China's Foreign Ministry, the two sides held "sincere, substantive and constructive" talks during several meetings held on September 16 and 17.
Sullivan's meeting with Wang was the latest in a series of high-level discussions between US and Chinese officials that could lay the groundwork for a meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.
Sullivan last met with top diplomat Wang in Vienna in May. China's Foreign Ministry said the two sides agreed to continue high-level contacts and hold bilateral talks on Asia-Pacific affairs, maritime affairs and foreign policy.
Meanwhile, the White House added that both sides "were committed to continuing this strategic channel of communication and to continued engagement and additional high-level talks in key areas in the coming months."
