The general in charge of Ukraine's ground forces said on Sunday that Ukrainian troops had recaptured the eastern village of Klishchiivka in the southern flank of Bakhmut, captured by the Russian aggressor in January.
"Klishchiivka was cleared of the Russians and liberated," Ukrainian ground forces commander Alexander Syrskyi said in a post on the Telegram messaging app. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko also confirmed on the Telegram network that the village was retaken after heavy fighting. Reuters news agency was unable to verify reports from the battlefield.
The village of Klishchiivka is about nine kilometers south of Bakhmut and had a population of about 400 before the war. That village is a few kilometers north of Andriivka, which was retaken earlier this week. Both villages have been devastated by months of fighting for control of Bakhmut.
The chief of staff of the Ukrainian president, Andriy Yermak, published a photo on the Telegram network on Sunday showing five Ukrainian servicemen holding national and military flags in front of a destroyed building. He wrote that Ukraine always gets its own territories.
The Ukrainian military said earlier on Sunday that Kiev troops "succeeded in the Klishchiivka locality of the Donetsk region, forcing the enemy to leave their positions." The city of Bakhmut fell to the Russians in May after months of fierce fighting. For several months, Ukrainian forces have carried out attacks in the north and south of the city to drive out the Russian aggressors.
Ukrainian military analysts said this week that the liberation of the areas near Bakhmut would allow the army to advance from the southern flank into the Bakhmut area, taking control of positions on the heights surrounding the area./ VOA
