Ukraine and Russia on Wednesday announced the first exchange of prisoners of war in nearly five months, freeing more than 200 people each, after negotiations brokered by the United Arab Emirates that Moscow described as complex.
Russia's defense ministry said 248 of its military personnel had been surrendered by Ukraine. Kiev said it had returned 230 people - 224 soldiers and six civilians - in what it said was the largest documented exchange of troops to date.
Ukraine's prisoner coordination center also confirmed the role of the United Arab Emirates, without giving details.
Despite the lack of a dialogue to end the 22-month war, Kiev and Moscow have carried out several prisoner exchanges since the first months of the Russian occupation in February 2022. But these exchanges became rare in 2023. The last one was carried out at the beginning of August./ VOA
