The former mayor of the Russian coastal city of Vladivostok, Oleg Gumenyuk - who in 2023 was sentenced to 12 years in prison for taking bribes - has been released from prison to serve in the Russian army in Ukraine.
His lawyer, Alexander Kitaev, said on Sunday that Gumenyuk's whereabouts were unknown for now, after he signed a contract with the Russian military late last year.
He explained that his client must complete military training first.
Gumenyuk is not the first convicted former Russian official to be released from prison to fight in Ukraine since Moscow launched its unprovoked invasion in February 2022.
Former deputy governor of the Kakasia region, Sergei Novikov, and former mayor of Bolshoi Kamen, Rustyam Abushayev, both convicted of corruption, were previously released to serve in the war in Ukraine./REL
