NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has conveyed a clear message on the eve of the Alliance summit to be held in Ankara, emphasizing that strengthening Europe's defense capabilities is essential for a stronger NATO better prepared for security challenges.
In his statement before the meeting of member country leaders, Rutte said that he expects all allied countries to present concrete and credible plans to achieve the new defense spending target of 5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"We will increase defense spending. We will have more resources," declared the NATO head, underlining that greater investments in the defense sector are necessary to guarantee the collective security of the allies.
Rutte stressed that member states are gradually increasing defense investments and that a militarily stronger Europe translates into an Alliance more capable of confronting current and future threats.
"A strong Europe means a strong NATO ," he said.
The Secretary General also reiterated that support for Ukraine will remain one of the Alliance's top priorities. According to him, NATO will continue to strengthen its military capabilities, increasing resources and defense infrastructure in the face of security challenges.
"We will further strengthen our alliance. In Ankara, countries will present their concrete plans for the 5% target. We will continue to support Ukraine, we will have more resources and military bases. We must be prepared for the Russian threat," Rutte declared.
Referring to recent developments in Ukraine, he condemned the new Russian attacks, describing them as further evidence of the need to strengthen NATO's deterrent capability.
"Russia carried out another terrible attack last night," Rutte said, stressing that the Alliance must continue to invest in defense to guarantee the security of member countries and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region.
