Egypt has opened a peace summit on the Gaza crisis today, as part of efforts to avoid a wider regional war.
Middle Eastern and European leaders are gathering in Cairo for the summit but are likely to struggle to agree a common position on the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
During an opening speech at the summit, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said "we will not leave, we will stay on our land".
More than a million Gazans have been told to leave their homes in Gaza City and surrounding areas as Israel launches a ground offensive.
Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he had invited leaders to agree on a roadmap to end the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and negotiate peace.
Two diplomats told the Reuters news agency that there is unlikely to be a joint statement from the summit because of the sensitivity surrounding any call for a ceasefire.
The absence of the US and several other major Western leaders has also cooled expectations of what the event might achieve.
