Scholz and his ministers are tested for drug use in Germany; will the same
Olaf Scholz

"Lord Chancellor, have you ever had a drink?"

This was the question of the "Sat.1/ProSieben TV" interviewer for Olaf Scholz, the head of the German government who approved the legalization of cannabis in the most populous country in Europe.

A week ago, the exit from the executive arrived and now the ball is passed to the Bundestag.

But soon – perhaps as early as 2024 – the recreational use of cannabis will no longer be a criminal offense in Germany either.

It does not mean that it will be completely liberalized: there is more than one restriction, because "it is still dangerous", underlines the Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach.

Therefore, the green light for possession of the substance, but with a limit of 25 grams per person and cultivation, but a maximum of three seedlings per person.

Also legalized are "cannabis clubs", i.e. groups consisting of a maximum of 500 people, who will be allowed to grow seedlings (but not for commercial purposes) and distribute a maximum of 25 grams per person per day, and up to 50 per month.

The limits for those under 21 are even stricter: the youngest will be able to take a maximum of 30 grams per month and with a Thc content – tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in cannabis – that does not exceed 10 percent.

The reform, for now, is not pleasing both those who consume it and those who oppose the substance.

The opposition accuses the Government of wanting to legalize a "dangerous drug" despite the opinion of many doctors.

While the first members of the newly born "clubs" argue that the laws are too strict and that nothing has been done against the "stigmatization" of consumers.

Meanwhile, the press take the opportunity to go and retrieve old statements from ministers or, better yet, ask them directly if they have ever used the substance in question.

In short, he has ever allowed Scholz himself a smoke.

"No, I have never smoked," replied the leader of the Social Democrats in an interview broadcast on Sunday evening.

For this occasion, even the words of foreign leaders are dusted, especially those of the United States.

Barack Obama, for example, wrote in an old autobiography that he had made "frequent use."

And how can we forget the answer to the fatal question - "Did you try it or not?" — which Bill Clinton gave during the 1992 election campaign.

"Yes, several times, but I didn't like it. And I didn't absorb it anyway."

To which Johnny Carson, the legendary host of the Tonight Show, followed up with a joke.

"This is the problem of the Democrats. Even when they do something wrong, they can't do it right."
