The United States canceled a shipment of bombs to Israel amid concerns about their possible use in an offensive in Rafah.
CNN writes that the shipment, which was canceled last week, includes 1,800 bombs weighing more than 900 kg and 1,700 bombs weighing more than 225 kg.
"We are particularly focused on the end use of bombs over 900 kg and the impact they can have on dense urban environments as we have seen in other parts of Gaza ," the official said.
Overnight, there were further Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, hours after Israeli forces backed by tanks took control of the Rafah border crossing on the border with Egypt.
Israeli shelling has been particularly intense around Rafah. Local doctors say seven members of a family were killed in an overnight attack.
Israeli leaders have warned for weeks that an invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah would happen at some point in the future, even though the US and others have publicly stated that such a ground operation should not happen.
The Biden administration has called for a comprehensive plan to protect the more than one million civilians sheltering in Rafah and avoid a widening humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the coastal enclave.
On Monday, Israel carried out what the US described as a "limited" operation in Rafah, taking control of the border crossing with Egypt that is a vital conduit for humanitarian aid.
