Several explosions were reported by witnesses in the capital, Caracas, starting around 2 a.m. local time. Videos posted on social media showed large explosions and what appeared to be a U.S. military aircraft flying low over the city.
The US Embassy in Venezuela issued a statement on its website saying it was aware of reports of explosions in and around Caracas.
The US Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, is also warning American citizens not to travel to Venezuela.
