USA, sanctions against two Russian spies; tried to interfere in the elections

The United States imposed sanctions on two Russian secret service agents on Friday for trying to interfere in a local election process in the US, part of Russia's "global malicious influence campaigns".

The Treasury Department release said the two agents, Yegor Sergeyevich Popov and Aleksei Borisovich Sukhodolov, both members of the Russian Security Service, through a network of conspirators, had attempted to undermine democratic processes in the United States and other countries.

They had collaborated with Russian national Aleksandr Viktorovich Ionov, who last year was charged by the Justice Department with years of efforts to use political groups in Florida, Georgia and California to interfere in elections.

"The United States will not tolerate the threat to democracy, and today's actions are in keeping with the administration's commitment to protect the system of representative government," said Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson.

The Treasury Department did not provide information on which elections the two Russian nationals tried to interfere with.
