The US has shown its "muscles" in the Mediterranean, deploying a submarine.
This is a message clearly aimed at regional opponents as the Biden administration tries to avoid a wider regional conflict in the middle of the Israel-Hamas war that has been going on since early October.
The US military command announced via the X messaging platform that an Ohio-class nuclear submarine has been deployed to its area of responsibility, which stretches from northeast Africa through the Middle East to central and southern Asia, foreign media reported.
The message comes two days after the Navy announced that two strike groups, Gerald Ford and Dwight Eisenhower, launched aircraft and practiced missile defense during a three-day exercise in the Mediterranean.
The announcement of a guided missile sub in the region comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a series of meetings with US partners in the Middle East. In a whirlwind trip, Blinken has visited Turkey, Iraq, Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and Cyprus.
