The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, held a discussion with journalists in Kiev shortly before leaving for a trip to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Grossi said he met with Volodymyr Zelenskyn to discuss the nuclear power plant, whose safety was seriously threatened after the Kakhovka dam explosion last week. A reservoir backed by the dam is used for cooling in the plant.
Grossi said the reservoir level was falling "quite steadily" but that it did not represent an "immediate danger".
" It is a serious situation because you are limited with the water you have there. If there was a break in the ports that contain this water or something like that, you would really lose all of your cooling capacity, " Grossi said.
Asked about Ukraine's counterattack, Grossi said he was "very concerned" that the plant could be caught up in an open war again.
" There is active fighting. So we're concerned that there could be, I mean, definitely mathematically, the possibilities of a strike, " he added.
