Donald Trump and his legal team have pleaded not guilty to 37 charges related to the alleged misuse of classified documents after leaving office and defrauding officials who tried to return them.
His plea was filed before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman. While the session was closed for cameras and live streaming.
Trump's lawyers also requested a jury trial during the former president's trial Tuesday in a federal court in Miami.
At the end of the hearing, Trump was allowed to leave the court without conditions or travel restrictions and did not ask for any cash bail.
Judge Goodman ruled that Trump is not allowed to communicate with potential witnesses in the case until the trial is over.
Now that the first hearing is over, it could take a year or more before the case reaches the trial stage.
We remind you that before today's session, the deputy marshals handcuffed the former president and took electronic copies of his fingerprints. Also, his assistant and co-defendant, Walt Nauta, was arrested and fingerprinted.
The criminal charges in the classified Justice Department documents case escalate the legal danger surrounding the 2024 GOP front-runner.
