At the same time, he had taken a leading role in negotiating a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages, which makes him a crucial figure not only for the internal functioning of Hamas, but also for international efforts to find a solution to the ongoing crisis.

Khalil al-Hayya has been one of Hamas' most important figures for decades and a central figure in its political office in Gaza.

Born in 1960 in Gaza City, he initially became known through the field of Islamic education, receiving university degrees in theology.

His political career led him to the Palestinian Legislative Assembly in 2006, and he subsequently became a close associate of Hamas's senior leadership. Since 2017, he has held the position of deputy head of the political bureau in Gaza and has been involved in crucial negotiations with Israel and other international mediators.

His international importance grew especially after 2024, when the deaths of senior figures such as Saleh al-Aruri and Yahya Sinwar left significant gaps in Hamas' leadership. Al-Haya has since been at the center of a five-member transitional leadership team that took over coordinating the movement's military and political decisions.

At the same time, he had taken a leading role in negotiating a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages, which makes him a crucial figure not only for the internal functioning of Hamas, but also for international efforts to find a solution to the ongoing crisis.

Essentially, Khalil al-Haya is today the only person from the "old" Hamas guard that Israel has left after the events of "Mavrou Saturday", the invasion and massacres by Hamas forces in its territories. Haya is a certain person with important connections both at the political and economic level and with Iran, having been present at all bilateral meetings of the last 20 years.

Haya is also today a person who has found "refuge" in Qatar with reports broadcast by Israeli media that he has chosen to stay out of Gaza and has received clear orders from Hamas to prolong the war and attacks on Israel.

"Today's attack on Qatar by Israel, even if it had in mind the new "leader" of Hamas, is a move with great risk. The Israeli warplanes that hit the site in a suburb of Doha were an "exclusively Israeli move," Netanyahu's office officially emphasized a few minutes after the attacks, and this is because just a few months ago US President Donald Trump was in Doha in person, who left the area with signed agreements worth more than $1 trillion.

It is difficult for this announcement from Israel to calm Qatar, and it is quite difficult not to have an official reaction from Saudi Arabia as well.

Today's Israeli attack on Qatar also significantly changes the situation throughout the region.
