President Donald Trump's administration has stripped Harvard University of its right to enroll international students, in an escalating conflict with the renowned Ivy League institution, stating that thousands of current students must transfer to other institutions or leave the country.
The Department of Homeland Security made the decision public on Thursday, accusing Harvard of creating an unsafe environment on campus by allowing what it called "anti-American and pro-terrorist agitators" to attack Jewish students.
Without presenting evidence, the authorities also accused the university of collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party.
" This means that Harvard can no longer enroll foreign students, and existing international students must either transfer to other universities or lose their legal status ," the agency's official statement said.
Harvard enrolls about 6,800 international students on its campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who make up more than a quarter of the total student body. Most of them are advanced-level students and come from more than 100 different countries.
“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for inciting violence, anti-Semitism, and collaboration with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus. It is a privilege, not a right, for universities to enroll foreign students and benefit from their higher tuition fees to help supplement their multibillion-dollar endowments. Harvard had many opportunities to do the right thing. It refused. Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the country ,” said Governor Kristi Noem.
Harvard University has said that the Department of Homeland Security's move to revoke its right to enroll international students is an unlawful retaliatory action that threatens serious harm to the university.
“ The government’s action is unlawful. We are fully committed to preserving its ability to host international students and scholars from more than 140 countries and to enrich the university. This retaliatory action threatens serious harm to the Harvard community and our country, and undermines Harvard’s academic and research mission ,” the university said in a statement.
The move comes after Harvard refused to provide information that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had previously requested regarding several foreign student visa holders attending the university.
The move marks a significant escalation of the Trump administration's campaign against the elite Ivy League university, which has emerged as one of Trump's most prominent institutional targets./ Pamphlet
