Local officials in Russia announced that at least 43 people were injured in an explosion that occurred today at an optical factory in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 kilometers from Moscow.
Six of the injured are in intensive care due to severe burns and head injuries, according to the city administration. Some of them received injuries from metal fragments.
Foreign media released a video that showed a large cloud of smoke and identified the stricken building as the Zagorsk Optical and Mechanical Factory, which makes night vision and other optical equipment for the military.
Russia's TASS news agency quoted emergency services as denying reports on social media that the explosion was caused by a drone attack.
The speculation was fueled by drone attacks in Moscow in recent months, which Moscow has blamed on Kiev, as well as Russian reports that it had prevented two new drone attacks near Moscow on the night of August 8.
TASS reported that the explosion occurred at the site where pyrotechnics were being kept and that a large warehouse was destroyed.
A sudden fire had damaged the same Zagorsk plant in June 2022.
