Italian rescue teams continue searching for survivors, after yesterday's explosion at a hydroelectric plant in Bologna, Italy, as a result of which 3 people lost their lives. Rescue teams said it is unlikely to find survivors from this serious event that shook Italy.
"The situation is very difficult, the water level is rising and the search for the four missing workers becomes more complicated," the rescue teams said.
Italian utility group Enel confirmed that a fire had broken out in one of its transformers at its hydro plant in Bargi, near Bologna, in the early hours of Tuesday afternoon. The fire department said an explosion had occurred at a dam in Lake Suviana, one of three man-made lakes that feed the power plant.
Regional fire chief Francesco Notaro told local media that part of the nine-story underground structure collapsed, starting a fire, causing flooding up to 60 meters deep.
Enel has not commented on the cause of this serious event. The company said the dam basin was not damaged and that the power plant was offline at the time of the incident, so there was no impact on the power supply.
