German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he shares the same position as US President Donald Trump regarding the overthrow of the Iranian regime. He was received by the US president in the US in a meeting in the Oval Office.
"We are on the same page when it comes to bringing down this terrible regime in Tehran. And we will talk about tomorrow, what will happen then," said Merz, sitting next to Trump.
Merz added that the priority remains ending the conflict as soon as possible and emphasizes that he hopes for peace and freedom to be restored in Iran.
"We all hope that this war will end as soon as possible. We hope that the Israeli and American military are doing the right things to end this and to have, indeed, a new government in the country, which is returning to peace and freedom," the German Chancellor said.
The statements come at a time when the Trump administration has given different arguments for attacks on Iran, citing both an "imminent threat" to the US and the need to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, Trump has called for the Iranian people to take control of the country, hinting that he has alternatives in mind for the future direction, although senior US officials have stated that the goal of the war is not regime change.
During the Oval Office meeting, Merz said a trade deal between the U.S. and Germany, which he said he would like to see approved as soon as possible, was also on the agenda. The war in Ukraine was also part of the talks between the two leaders.
